How Often Should Carpets Be Cleaned ?
The short answer is regularly. Regular cleaning and vacuuming of carpets will almost always improve their life span and keep them looking newer for longer.
If you are thinking about putting down carpets and are shopping around or already have them in your home you will know that they are not cheap. Yeah we are all attracted to the huge “50% discount” signs outside the stores and when you calculate your square meters you need it seems not so expensive, that is the catch, the price per square meter only includes the carpet. However once you get to actually buying the carpet you also need, underlay, grippers and a few other items that eventually make buying carpets a real investment and as with all investments they need to be looked after in order to last longer. Frequent cleaning equals longer lasting carpets, fact.
Not all dirt is equal and regular vacuuming will only remove the dirt that is loose, like sand grains that you would find on the beach. The dirt that cannot be removed is dirt that has a sticky or oily residue that will not be removed from the fibres with regular vacuuming. As this dirt gets ingrained in the fibres it naturally attracts more dirt due to its sticky texture. Over time the fibres will become clogged with dirt and the colour of the carpet will become dull and the feel of the carpet will change as the fibres stick together.
Although the colour will look as though it has faded, it hasn’t. The fibres are just coated in a film of dirt hiding their natural colour. The exception to this is if the carpet is in a very sunny room that has many hours of direct sunlight which could “bleach” the colour out. Removing the dirt on a regular basis will help keep the carpet looking like new and extend its life. Dirt can be abrasive and when walking over the carpet the dirt particles will rub together causing friction and damage the fibres.
Although vacuuming won’t remove all the dirt it should be an important part of your daily routine. This will remove the larger, more abrasive, dirt particles. Apart from regular vacuuming a typical household should have a professional carpet cleaner come in once a year to remove the built up oily residue that attracts dirt. Even though a lot of new carpets come with a protection this wears off as more and more dirt rubs together. After each yearly clean a new coating of protection should be applied to protect the carpet for another year. Protection not only helps in preventing dirt becoming clogged in the fibres but will reduce amount of fading that occurs in areas of strong sunlight.
A carpet that is vacuumed regularly, cleaned once a year professionally and is protected can last an entire lifetime obviously depending on the quality of the carpet in the first place. There are a few ways that carpets can be cleaned however it is important to make sure that there is very little moisture left after the cleaning. Moisture is bad for a number of reasons; it can cause bacteria to grow, the carpet fibres can start to rot and ultimately the build-up of bacteria will create a mouldy smell as it eats away at the carpet so make sure that you chose a system that dries quickly and doesn’t cause any damage.
