Sanitizing Carpet (Properly)

microbes in dirty carpet

Everyone likes to have a home that is clean and healthy however there are many people who forget about one of the greatest culprits of bacteria and dirt, the carpet. Although regular vacuuming is important, to reduce dirt and other substances that can cause allergies, it doesn’t clean the carpet to a degree that kills germs.  Carpet sanitising is the only way to ensure that the bacteria in the carpet are eliminated.

Every day we take off our clothes and put them in the laundry, not necessarily because they are soiled but because of the build-up of bacteria. It’s easy enough to clean clothes, just throw them in the washing machine, but carpets cannot simply be rolled up and placed in a washing machine.  Over time your carpets will build up bacteria and start to have a musty smell. This may not be noticeable to you as it will gradually increase over time, but the facts are that carpets harbour germs.

The only way to eliminate these bacteria is through a thorough cleaning by a company that has the proper equipment and then they will sanitise and deodorise your carpets leaving them clean and smelling good.  However it is important to understand what causes bacteria to build up in order to make sure that the carpets are cleaned properly and that the cleaning doesn’t actually increase the growth of bacteria.

carpet mites in dirty carpetOne of the fastest ways to let bacteria grow is by giving them the best environment, moisture. We have all at one stage or another found a damp cloth or item of clothing that has been left for some time and is what we commonly call, “mouldy”.  That mould is a form of bacteria and obviously carpets cannot be simply put in the dryer or on the washing line to dry so it is extremely important to make sure that whoever cleans your carpets leaves them dry.

There is no point having carpets cleaned, sanitised and deodorised but left wet. Sometimes the moisture cannot be felt on the surface but most carpets have a backing to them that will absorb water and it is impossible to totally remove this moisture after saturating it with water, the perfect place for bacteria to grow. The only way to get rid of moisture in the carpet backing is by industrial dehumidifiers and fans.

Although sanitising your carpet is the only way to eliminate bacteria, make sure the company doing the eliminating doesn’t create an environment for bacteria to grow. It can be a real hassle and costly if you end up with soaking wet carpets.
